About

Our story began in 2022, when a group of parents at Rose City Park Elementary noticed their children’s growing passion for chess. We teamed up with the IRCO SUN program and Chess for Success to start an afterschool chess program. Soon after, the kids began participating in tournaments and performed remarkably well.

However, we wanted to create a more relaxed environment where kids could enjoy playing many games on weekends and meet other young chess players outside of their school. This desire sparked the idea for a casual chess club, one that focuses on building community and encouraging socialization. The name Among Cascades evokes the idea of hidden potential and discovery. Just like navigating the highs and lows of the Cascade region, our journey in chess is about finding our place within the community and uncovering our abilities along the way.
